Glasgow University pay-day chaos as 9000 staff wake to find empty accounts amid 'banking error'

University of Glasgow staff have been left 'concerned' after waking to find their wages missing from bank accounts.

Internal emails show that the university are currently investigating the issue which is believed to affected an estimated 9000 workers. It is understood that the non-payment may be down to a 'banking error'.

Unions have called for the error to be fixed as soon as possible, with concerns raised over the payment of bills including rent, mortgages and direct debits which could go unpaid. Unison has called for Glasgow University to compensate any staff who are out of pocket due to charges incurred by the incident.

An internal email sent by Glasgow University states: "We are aware of an issue with the payment system, relating to problems with our bank. The payroll team is currently investigating to rectify as soon as possible. Once we have more information we will issue a further update."

Branch Chair at University of Glasgow, Sophie Watson said: “We understand there are technical issues with a number of banks. However, the university need to get this fixed urgently and compensate any staff who are out of pocket. Rent, mortgages and direct debits could go unpaid, and staff could go overdrawn and incur further charges.

"UNISON is in contact with management and staff, and we are trying to get answers from the university to see when this will be resolved, and we will support staff who need further advice”.

University and College Union Scotland official Mary Senior said: "We know of around 9,000 staff who the University of Glasgow has not paid today. It appears this is due to a banking error, but our members urgently need their wages, so we expect the university and its bank to fix this as soon as humanly possible."

The University of Glasgow confirmed that staff have now all been paid.

A spokesperson said: “We regret that members of University staff did not receive salary payments for June this morning.

“We have been investigating this as a matter of utmost urgency and continue to work with our bank to resolve the delay.

“We are working to ensure that all staff receive payments as soon as possible, and that no staff member experiences financial detriment as a result.”
