Piers Morgan has confirmed that he's off to Beverly Hills for a few weeks as he takes a break from presenting Good Morning Britain.

The divisive 54-year-old was responding to a tweet alleging that he'd been "taken off air after calls for him to be sacked", when he wrote: "When you say 'taken off air', I think you mean 'has taken himself off air to go lie under a palm tree in Beverly Hills'."

Following some comments he recently made about identifying as a "penguin", a petition was created to try to get him sacked by ITV.

Meanwhile, Piers was critical of Britain's Got Talent judge David Walliams on Twitter earlier this week, when he called him out for liking nasty tweets directed at him.

He posted: "Amusing that ⁦@davidwalliams regularly 'likes' the nastiest tweets about me, yet is such a snivelling toady to my face. It's not my fault ⁦@BGT ratings were so much higher when I was in your chair Dave!"

Luckily for Walliams, his Little Britain co-star Matt Lucas was on hand to defend him.

Lucas replied: "Purely objectively - 1) He was probably being polite. Some people are. 2) Boasting about the BGT ratings and popularity when you were briefly on it to someone who has not only transformed the show but is consistently the biggest-selling author in the country didn't work."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6.30am on ITV.
