Gordon Ramsay Says He’s ‘Lucky to Be Here’ After ‘Really Bad’ Bicycling Accident: My Helmet ‘Saved My Life’
“I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week,” the chef said in an Instagram post
Gordon Ramsay says he’s lucky to be up and walking after experiencing a bad bicycling accident.
The MasterChef star, 57, revealed in a post on Instagram on Saturday, June 15, that the accident happened earlier this week while he had been biking in Connecticut.
Noting that the incident “really shook me" and he had been admitted to a hospital for care, Ramsay said, “Honestly, I’m lucky to be here.”
“I’m in pain. It’s been a brutal week,” he added while lifting up his chef’s jacket to reveal his heavily bruised ribs. “And I’m sort of getting through it. But I cannot tell you the importance of wearing a helmet.”
In his caption, Ramsay explained that though he did not “break any bones or suffer any major injuries,” he was “a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato.”
Ramsay then reiterated that he was “thankful” he had been wearing a helmet during the accident, as it “saved my life.”
“I don’t care how short the journey is. I don’t care, you know, the fact that these helmets cost money … they’re crucial,” he said. “Even with the kids, a short journey, they’ve got to wear a helmet.”
Ramsay concluded his video and caption by wishing families a “great” and “safe” Father’s Day.

In the second slide of his Instagram post, Ramsay shared a photo taken of himself before the accident. He could be seen in a yellow and black cycling jersey, with a green helmet on and yellow shades as he posed alongside a green bike.
In a follow-up photo, he shared a look at the equipment after the accident. His cycling jersey could be seen ripped up and his bike helmet was severely damaged in the front.

The TV chef has had a passion for cycling and competing in Ironman races for a couple of years. In 2018, he said, per The Daily Mail, that he took on the hobbies to “get in serious shape.”
“The more I train, the more normal I am, the more I feel that I’m still unchanged. It’s just another little reminder of who I really am,” Ramsay said at the time.
