Who Is Gordon Smart? Meet Good Morning Britain's new presenter

The journalist has officially joined the line-up of the ITV morning show.

Good Morning Britain has a new face with Gordon Smart joining its ranks.

The journalist made his official debut on the series on 29 December, joining Charlotte Hawkins on the desk to go over the day's news.

Announced earlier this week, Smart shared a photo from behind the desk and wrote on Twitter: "Looking forward to making my debut hosting [GMB] this Thursday and Friday with [Charlotte Hawkins].

"Told my dad about the new gig and he said 'better get a spray tan, son.' Good. See you bright and early at 6am, 29th and 30th December. Good Morning Britain!"

Who is Gordon Smart?

Born 31 March 1980, Gordon Smart is a Scottish native with a well-established career as a broadcaster and journalist.

Smart began his journalism career at the Evening Telegraph and Dundee Courier and studied journalism at Edinburgh's Napier University.

After working as a football coach, he later relocated to London where he would work for The Sun and News Of The World in 2003.

By May 2016 he had been promoted to deputy editor of The Sun, but had left the paper completely by the end of that year.

Since then, he has joined the world of radio, hosting the weekday evening show in 17 January, where he remained until 2020 when he quit the series due to ill health.

He also worked for talkRADIO's drive time show, and has a podcast with Line Of Duty star Martin Compston, Restless Natives.

Smart has been married to his wife since 2003, and together they have two children – son Jimmy and daughter Laurie.

Good Morning Britain announced Smart would be joining the line-up as a main presenter on 27 December.

"I'm thrilled to be joining the amazing stable of talent, in front and behind the camera, on Good Morning Britain," he said at the time.

"So many of the issues facing the country right now are close to home and I’m relishing the chance to join the debate."

Joining Charlotte Hawkins, his first episode on 29 December saw him admit his nerves on joining the panel, saying he had "first stay at school" vibes.

"I feel like you're the clever girl at school and I'm copying your homework. I think I wrote your name down by mistake!" he joked.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
