Now that R+L=J has been solved, the attention of Game of Thrones fans has turned to the identity of the Prince That Was Promised.

Is it Jaime Lannister? Jon Snow?

Either way, it looks like the prophecy will come into play in a big way over the final two seasons of the HBO drama – potentially confirmed by a neat Easter egg.

First of all, let's back up a bit. Who is the Prince That Was Promised?

A mysterious figure from the book series who is reborn from the mythic hero Azor Ahai, the Prince That Was Promised is destined to lead mankind in its war against darkness by wielding a sword known as the Lightbringer.

In simple terms, this person is responsible for bringing down the White Walkers. Pretty big deal, if you ask us.

So, HBO released a bunch of fresh images recently and this one stuck out:

Just what is Gilly reading? Trust Reddit to figure that out – it's apparently from The World of Ice and Fire, a companion volume to the A Song of Ice and Fire novels.

Among this text reads this sentence: "This legend has spread west from Asshai, and the followers of R'hllor claim that this hero was named Azor Ahai, and prophesy his return."

Azor Ahai – the mythic hero who would later reincarnate to become the Prince That Was Promised.

This little nod adds credibility to the theory that the Prince That Was Promised will become a key factor in the surely inevitable fight against the White Walkers...

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on Sunday, July 16 and Monday, July 17 on Sky Atlantic in the UK.
