Grade-II listed Essex pub set to be re-opened by boutique hotel and restaurant

A grade II-listed Essex pub is set to be re-opened  three years after closing – by an Epping-based boutique hotel.

Funky Monk say they expect The King’s Arms in Broomfield, Chelmsford, to be opening in "early 2024".

The fish restaurant and hotel acquired the “substantial Grade II listed public house” on Main Road Broomfield, in October 2023.

Described as ”dominating a notable roadside position on one of Chelmsford’s busiest arterial roads,” the historic building comprises a two-section bar, five-bedroom accommodation, trade patio and car park.

At the time of the deal Leisure and hospitality specialist Sidney Phillips said  Funky Monk intends “to extensively refurbish the 17th Century property to create an appealing pub with boutique letting bedrooms.”

Broomfield Parish Council had applied for the pub to be designated as an asset of community value.

However, Chelmsford City Council said there was no evidence that “an actual use of the premises that was not an ancillary use furthered the social wellbeing or interests of the local community”.

Funky Monk want to open Monday to Sunday 11am to 11pm.
