'Great British Bake Off' unveils the contestants ahead of new series

A nuclear scientist, a music teacher and a nanny are among the hopefuls on the new series of The Great British Bake-Off.

The Channel 4 show returns on 13 September and has unveiled the 12 contestants.

A snap posted on Twitter shows them posing near the famous tent.

"Say hello to the class of 2022," said the caption.

This year's hopefuls range from 18 to 60.

The male contestants are electronics engineer Abdul, 29; nuclear scientist James, 25; head teacher's PA Janusz, 34; music teacher Kevin, 33; nanny Sandro, 30; and 45-year-old former charity director Will.

While the females are supermarket cashier Carole, 59; IT manager Dawn, 60; student and sales assistant Maisam, 18; architectural assistant Maxy, 29; masters student Rebs, 23; and 32-year-old cardiovascular research assistant Syabira.

This year's bakers are a talented bunch - Kevin plays a variety of musical instruments, Maisam speaks five languages, Sandro can box, ballet dance and breakdance, and Carole has her own gardening show on local radio called Compost Carole.

Viewers will also see the bakers bring a variety of international flavours to the tent, drawing on their backgrounds with Syabira from Malaysia, Janusz from Poland, Sandro from Angola, Swedish Maxy, Libyan Maisam, and Abdul from Saudi Arabia.

The new series of the much-loved show will see the return of judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, who will be dishing out baking tips and, hopefully, a few handshakes.

Presenters Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas will also be back.

Fans said they can't wait for the show's return after seeing the new contestants.

"So excited to get to know our new Bake Off class!" one person tweeted.

"Looking forward to meeting you all on screen - and all the wonderful bakes," posted another.

Someone else wrote: "This show is the ultimate feel good watch…Good luck to all the lovely contestants."

"The country has never needed a lovely, gentle, soothing balm of the wonderful @BritishBakeOff more," said another excited viewer.

The Great British Bake Off returns on 13 September at 8pm on Channel 4.
