Great British Bake Off’s Mary Berry reveals plans for new BBC show with Mel and Sue

Mary Berry has said she will continue working with presenters Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins after this year’s Great British Bake Off final, but joked they could be swapping baking for gardening.

The beloved Bake Off judge, 81, told Chris Evans on Radio 2 on Wednesday morning that her decision to stay with the BBC was made “straight away”, but that no plans had been made about what the trio will do next.

She said: “It was a gut feeling and I made it straight away for myself, having discussed it with my family and others. I’m very happy I’ve stayed with the BBC. Everything I’ve done has been with the BBC and I wanted to stay with them.”

Showing a sign of support for her Bake Off co-judge Paul Hollywood, who decided to sign a three-series deal with Channel 4, Mary added: “I’m sure the programme will go on to be a little bit different, but it will still be wonderful.”

As for Mel and Sue, who decided against renewing their contract with the new broadcaster, Mary revealed that she is keen to reunite with the pair on television projects in the near future.

She explained: “We will do something because we’re good pals, and who knows what it would be? We haven’t been approached yet, but we would love to do something together. I just love their humour.”

Considering swapping flour for flowers, she jokingly added: “It may not be baking, you never know, it could be gardening. I’m a very keen gardener you know.”

In the meantime, Bake Off’s remaining contestants – Andrew Smyth, Jane Beedle and Candice Brown – are hoping to rise to the occasion and be crowned the seventh series winner.

With more than 16 million viewers expected to tune into the royal-themed finale, Mary promised that tonight’s episode of the popular BBC One show is “the most difficult one we’ve ever had.”

She said: “It really is the most difficult we’ve ever had, because you know, (it is) series seven and the showstopper is… we are wanting sheer perfection and they will be very nervous because they have watched every series.”

The Great British Bake Off final airs tonight on BBC One at 8pm.
