‘Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 3’ Blasts To $529M WW; ‘Mario Bros’ Crosses $1.2B & Propels Universal Past $2B In 2023 – International Box Office

UPDATE, writethru: After crossing the $300M mark globally through Monday last week, Disney/Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has thrust to another milestone. The James Gunn-directed threequel handily crossed the half a billion mark in the sophomore frame and now sits at an estimated $528.8M global through Sunday. Of that, $213.2M is from domestic and $315.6M at the international box office.

The $529M global cume lands the gang as the 2nd biggest Hollywood release of the year so far worldwide. Overseas, the film is about to pass the final gross of the original Guardians of the Galaxy ($318M; today’s rates and sans Russia). The IMAX global cume is $43.6M.

More from Deadline

For Star Lord & company, strong offshore midweeks led to a second-weekend of $92M in 52 markets, a drop of 40% from opening; this is better than GOTG the first, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, GOTG2 and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the same markets. It also marks the 5th best hold for a second weekend on an MCU title internationally. As we noted last weekend, word of mouth has helped bolster the Rocket origins story.

The Top 5 overseas markets are China ($58.4M), UK ($29.6M), Mexico ($24.7M), Korea ($22.1M) and France ($18.3M). GOTG3 notably held onto No. 1 in China this session, however Fast X is coming on strong with previews starting on Tuesday. That movie is leading presales play ahead of its Wednesday bow there and throughout the week.

Meanwhile, Guardians’ Chris Pratt is doing double duty at the top of the chart this weekend as the voice of Mario in Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie, which is estimated at $675M overseas and $1.21B global through Sunday. As his Insta handle goes, it’s a Prattprattpratt weekend.

It’s also a milestone weekend for Universal which becomes the second studio to cross the $2B mark globally this year. The total is $2.013B through Sunday with $910M from domestic and $1.03B from international.

Following a $26.1M frame in 80 markets, Mario is now the No. 4 biggest animated film of all time globally, and Universal’s biggest. The Top 5 markets are Mexico ($82.4M), UK ($63.2M), Japan ($59.8M), France ($55M) and Germany ($50.1M). In Mexico, Mario and Luigi have overtaken Avengers: Endgame to front the 2nd biggest movie of all time.

Mario notably overtook Despicable Me 3 in Japan in its second weekend to become the biggest Universal animation and biggest Illumination title of all time in the market. In Germany, thanks to the continued strong performance of Super Mario, the 13 Illumination films combined have exceeded the 40M admissions mark, corresponding to an average of 3M+ per film.

Opening in its final market and with a terrific 38% holdover drop, Warner Bros/New Line’s Evil Dead Rise scared up another $6.7M this weekend from 65 overseas markets. The international running cume is $71.6M for $131.8M through Sunday. Philippines debuted to $199K on 32 screens, ahead of M3GAN by 64%, and Scream VI by 174%. Hong Kong launched with $125K on 47 screens, 33% above Scream VI.

The Top 5 markets to date are UK ($6.3M), Mexico ($6.2M), India ($4.5M), Brazil ($4.2M) and Indonesia ($4.1M)
