Hairy Bikers emotional in Dave Myers’ final TV scenes
TV star Myers passed away in February after battling cancer
Dave Myers is seen hugging fellow Hairy Bikers star Si King as they complete their final journey in his last onscreen appearance.
The chefs and close friends filmed their final programme - The Hairy Bikers: Go West – in 2023 as late star Myers was undergoing treatment for cancer. He passed away in February at the age of 66, with King telling fans on Instagram: “I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime.”
His last programme has continued to air on BBC Two, with the final instalment set for Tuesday (19 March), almost three weeks after his death.
What happens in Dave Myers’ last programme?
Myers’ final show sees the motorcycle-riding pair travelling to Devon and Dorset for the last leg of their tour “out west”. As their road trip ends, they hug in emotional scenes as Myers admits that it had “been tough at times”.
“I've had chemotherapy all the time we've been filming,” he said. “It hasn't been easy but we've got there and it's just a wonderful feeling.” The star said it had been “a dream come true” for him.
“We've done it, but more importantly, he's done it,” added King, looking tearful. After pausing to compose himself, he went on: “I’m his mate and I love him like family and a brother… just lost for words. It's quite remarkable what he's done.”
“Who knows what the future holds but for the moment I'm living in the present, and it's pretty fine I tell you,” said Myers.
A picture of the late star appeared after the credits, with the tribute: “In loving memory of our friend, Dave Myers 1957 - 2024.”
The Hairy Bikers: Go West
The Hairy Bikers’ final programme together saw them travel from Scotland to Devon. Myers was from the west coast and during their journey they got to visit some of his old haunts as well as places they had been together in the decades that they made TV with each other.
Highlights saw them visit North Wales, a place where Myers spent childhood holidays with his family. He even got to fulfil a childhood dream of driving a steam train.
The duo also explored Merseyside and the Wirral, drove around the River Severn and tasted cookies at a bakery in Bristol, with Myers saying that the simple moments shared with his longtime friend "touched the soul".
Dave Myers’ cancer battle
Myers announced in May 2022 that he had been diagnosed with cancer, opening up as he talked to King on the Agony Uncles podcast. "Anyway Kingy, I’ve got to come clean now, I haven’t been too well recently and basically, I’ve got to have some chemo, you know all this anyway,” he said.
"So this year is going to be a bit quiet for me, I’m not going to be filming, some of the festivals I’m not going to be able to go to, some may be OK but this year’s a bit of a write off for us."
The star, who didn’t share what type of cancer he had, opened up to fans about what it was like as he underwent chemo. “I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy," he said on White Wine Question Time.
He also told how King had supported him, sharing on BBC Breakfast in November 2023: "There was one day when I was poorly and he came round to our house and made me mince and dumplings, but he does it properly.
"You know, when the bottom of the dumplings are just soft, the top of the dumplings are crusty, and I really… I remember that with mashed potato. That was lovely. There was a freezer full and that was great."
Si King’s moving words after best friend’s death
At the end of February, King posted a message on Instagram saying that Myers had “passed away peacefully at home” on 28 February with his wife Lili, family and close friends by his side.
“All who knew Dave are devastated at his passing,” he said. “His beloved wife brought him such happiness as did her children, Iza and Sergiu who Dave loved like his own.
“Personally, I am not sure I can put into words on how I feel at the moment. My best friend is on a journey that for now, I can’t follow. I will miss him every day and the bond and friendship we shared over half a lifetime. I wish you god’s speed brother; you are and will remain a beacon in this world. See you on the other side. Love ya.”
