‘The Hanging’: Dangerous New Craze Sees Children Dangling From Balconies

Is this the latest in a series of dangerous teenage crazes?

These images show school children in Colombia dangling perilously from ledges in a new game dubbed El Colgado – The Hanging.

The craze involves holding people over a ledge for as long as possible and has become popular with high-school students in the country.

Teachers, police and parents fear it is only a matter of time before someone dies.

It has been filmed several times in a high-school in the city of Santa Marta in northern Colombia’s Magdalena Department, with both boys and girls taking part.

Students have to prove their bravery by letting themselves be held over a balcony by friends for as long as they can.

Worried father Javier Linero said: “That’s dangerous. They’re taking a big risk. Someone should keep them under surveillance."

Local education secretary Eudenis Godoy said: "We are deeply worried that our students are involved in these incidents.

“Through the education secretariat, we will apply the necessary measures established by education laws to stop this from happening.”
