Harry Styles encouraged concert-goers to join him in a round of applause for the Queen as he took to the stage in New York.

The former One Direction heartthrob was opening the show at Madison Square Garden when he paused to reflect on the late monarch, who died on Thursday (8 September) at the age of 96.

"From my homeland, there was some very sad news today, the passing of Queen Elizabeth II," he told the crowd.

“Please join me in a round of applause for 70 years of service."

Styles then raised his arms above his head and started a long clap, along with the fans at the 20,000-capacity venue.

Some cheered and whistled as they paid their respects to Her Majesty.

“Thank you, Madison Square Garden!" Styles said as the applause came to an end.

The monarch's death was announced on Thursday evening, with Buckingham Palace announcing that she "died peacefully at Balmoral".

TV channels have altered broadcasts in the wake of her death, with some programmes being cancelled and special tributes airing.

Countless stars have also paid tribute to the late monarch.

QI star Stephen Fry said on Twitter that he was "sobbing" at the news while Dame Helen Mirren - who played the Queen on the big screen and on the stage - said she was “proud to be an Elizabethan”.

"We mourn a woman, who, with or without the crown, was the epitome of nobility," she wrote on Instagram.

Sir Elton John said he was "deeply saddened" at the news.

He wrote on Instagram: "She was an inspiring presence to be around and led the country through some of our greatest and darkest moments with grace, decency and a genuine caring warmth."

Piers Morgan said the late royal was "the greatest Monarch in history, and the greatest of Britons".

"Dignified, humble, wise, stoic, and dedicated to duty & service to the country she loved," he said on Instagram.
