He had teased his comeback with cryptic tweets, and billboards with the words “Do you know who you are?” had started popping up in London and New York.

Styles also returned to Instagram for the first time in over a year in order to prepare fans for the single.

The arrival of the dramatic video for Lights Up – which sees Styles topless and dancing with other shirtless men and women – sparked a flurry of excitement among fans.

Many posted messages on social media expressing their delight – and some said they were so overwhelmed that they were actually in tears.

“@Harry_Styles really just dropped a song out of nowhere and made me cry at midnight,” one person posted on Twitter.

“Harry Styles, the only one to make me cry over and over of excitement when ever he releases a new song,” said another.

One impressed fan tweeted: “@Harry_Styles my heart might actually burst.

“Love the song. Love the meaning of it. Love the music video. Love you so much.

“Thank you for putting out there such a powerful song.”

Styles unveiled his self-titled debut album in 2017, and it went to the top of the charts in the UK and the US.

He has released three solo singles - Sign Of The Times, Two Ghosts and Kiwi.
