Yahoo News New HBO show will allow you to choose your own story
The way we watch TV has changed so much in the last few years, and HBO and Ocean's Trilogy director Steven Soderbergh are looking to push it even further.
In a lengthy interview with Film Comment, Soderbergh talked about his upcoming TV project titled Mosaic and how it would work.
"You download the app, and the first chapter begins," he explained. "At the end of that chapter, you are given the possibility of going right or left, and after that you just keep going.
"It's a murder. Not a murder-mystery so much. There are two different time frames, one contemporary and one four years ago.
"This case that everyone thought was solved gets reexamined with interesting results. So you get to go back and forth depending on who you want to follow at what point."
Sorderbergh explained that the version you can control with the app should be coming out in November, while a linear, six-hour version of Mosaic will be out in January.
Video games like Quantum Break and Late Shift have been experimenting with live-action stories that can be based on player choices through dialogue or actions, but Soderbergh insists Mosaic won't be like that.
"Mosaic is a fixed universe. Your choices don't alter what happens. You get to decide how you want to navigate your way through this universe.
"This for me rides a seam of traditional narrative. It's not a game."
