A hen party was left petrified and fled their rural getaway in Argyll and Bute after spotting what they believe to be a ghostly child in a celebratory picture.

The women were enjoying a pre-wedding bash at a secluded estate when they noticed an image of a young boy crouching on a wooden stump behind them as they joyously raised their arms.

After delving into the property's past, the group uncovered a tragic tale of a child who reportedly drowned in a nearby lake after sleepwalking into it.

The haunting incident seems to echo the story of 'The Blue Boy', a BBC TV film from 1994 about a four year old's drowning in Loch Eck, starring Emma Thompson, which was allegedly shot at the same spot the photo was taken.

A debate has raged online about the pic.

This dramatised account is linked to The Coylet Inn, a historic 17th-century inn by the loch, reputed to be haunted. The chilling photo surfaced last summer, igniting heated online discussions about the legitimacy of the ghostly figure.

A Reddit user commented: "Welp..not going to be sleeping tonight". Paul Murton, the screenwriter for 'The Blue Boy', mentioned in a 1994 interview with The Herald, "I was talking to the hotelier about it and he mentioned the Blue Boy."

"This, he said, was a young child who had been on holiday with his parents in the hotel and he had been sleepwalking during the night. He had strayed outside, fallen into the loch, and drowned. When they found his body it was blue with the cold. Hotel staff had noticed that things like cutlery and plates were often out of place for no apparent reason - perhaps more sinister than that was the fact that they sometimes found wet footprints upstairs in the corridor."
