Hollyoaks has confirmed a heartbreaking new Donna-Marie story will air soon.
Donna-Marie has been struggling with the death of her daughter Juliet from cancer, culminating recently in tragic scenes where the grieving mum relapsed and overdosed on drugs.
In upcoming scenes, Donna-Marie's story will intertwine with Joel Dexter's own recent discovery of having Type 1 Diabetes and coming to terms with the health-related changes that come with it.
Joel has been determined to pursue his firefighter exam in spite of the physical setbacks and receives more encouragement from Leela Lomax in upcoming scenes.
Leela will also discover that Donna-Marie has once again relapsed, but refuses to give up on her friend for Juliet's sake. With Joel expressing his fears over Donna-Marie's sobriety, Leela organises an intervention.
However, there's more than meets that eye as Joel references his own past with addiction, leaving some doubt in Donna-Marie's mind over whether or not she saw him take his vital medications.
Donna-Marie tries to use this secret to her advantage in asking Joel for drugs, yet he refuses to be blackmailed by her.
After Joel confides in Dr Sharon that he wants to keep his diagnosis private even from Leela and his dad Warren, he's once again confronted with an offer from Donna-Marie.
Donna-Marie announces that she will keep his secret so long as he can secure more drugs for her. Before the situation can fully play out, there's a blaze at the Lomax house.
Joel races in to save Donna-Marie, but feels guilty when he's hailed as a hero. At the hospital, Donna-Marie apologises for relapsing when she receives treatment for smoke inhalation.
Her apology isn't good enough for Joel, as he gives Leela an ultimatum to choose between Donna-Marie and himself. Leela struggles with the ultimatum, especially given Donna-Marie's condition.
Leela eventually grows concerned when Donna-Marie asks for her phone back to see pictures of Juliet. With Leela pledging to find a support worker for her friend, Donna-Marie goes to visit Juliet's grave.
Donna-Marie has a heartfelt moment with Diane Hutchinson on the way to the graveside and eventually breaks down as she apologises for her relapse.
At the same time, Leela notices that Donna-Marie is gone and assumes the worst…
Hollyoaks streams first online via Channel 4, with new episodes dropping each weekday morning. The show airs Mondays to Fridays at 6.30pm on Channel 4, and at 7pm on E4.
