Hollyoaks newcomer Joe McGann has revealed that viewers will get a first glimpse of Edward Hutchinson's sinister side next week.

Edward, who is Tony's father and the show's new supervillain, makes his first appearance in tonight's E4 first look episode (October 18).

The new arrival is drawn to the village after hearing that the funeral of his grandson Harry Thompson is about to take place.

Although Edward quickly manages to charm the likes of Diane and Cindy, Finn O'Connor doesn't trust him from the start. Next week's scenes see Finn decide to follow Edward, which could pay off when he spots the mysterious character doing something shocking.

Speaking about the upcoming scenes, Joe explained: "Edward overhears Cindy talk about her problem at the florist, where her business is being held up by a rare bird.

"Edward decides to take matters into his own hands in a quite shocking way. Cindy's none the wiser but Finn catches him in the act. Finn is quite shocked by what he sees."

Describing Edward in general, Joe continued: "He's an intelligent surgeon. He's done well in life. He's focused and self-improved. Besides being a surgeon, he has picked up other skills.

"On the downside, he's a narcissist and he's a manipulator. He sees himself before he sees everybody else. He's not all bad though, he has some good sides. I think he's a good granddad. I think part of him would like to be a good father to Tony, but he has an eye to other main chances which kind of distorts this fact."

Asked why Edward connects with his family after so long away, Joe explained: "In the storyline, we find out that he lost the love of his life, his wife, in a tragic accident. My reading of it is that there's been enough time for that to stop hurting. He has two children from that marriage who survived. They're older and away from home now.

"I think it's an empty nest thing, and he's at a time in his life where he's collating, looking back over possible mistakes he wants to rectify. He sees the publicity around Harry's funeral, and he knows that Tony is missing.

"All Diane knows of him is that he abandoned Tony. The reception is a little short of openly hostile. Then she sees that he's a man who has his charm, his sophistication, and he's worldly about most subjects. He throws a little party for Diane and her friends, trying to win her around.

"I think he becomes successful when Diane sees the way other people react to Edward and she mellows towards him."

However, speaking about Edward's thoughts on Finn, Joe added: "Edward sees sex offenders as pariahs, outside of society, so he genuinely doesn't like the idea of Finn being around his grandchildren.

"He hates the idea of them looking up to him as a male role model, and of course he sees himself as a very good male role model. I think he sees Finn as an obstacle to his longer-term plans."

Hollyoaks airs weeknights at 6.30pm on Channel 4, with first look screenings at 7pm on E4.
