Huddersfield man banned from town centre after noon is back behind bars for 'ignoring court order'

A man who was jailed after breaching a court order banning him from Huddersfield from noon every day is again behind bars.

Andrew Hackin, 51, from Chesil Bank, Quarmby in Huddersfield was jailed for 12 weeks on Saturday June 15 for breaching a five year Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) imposed on him on April 11. Hackin had been served with the five-year order due to causing persistent anti-social behaviour, often linked to alcohol, which caused distress to residents and shop staff.

Under the terms of his CBO he was forbidden from entering the area of Huddersfield town centre from Castlegate South and Queensgate after 12 noon every day, unless he had a pre-arranged appointment with services or the police. He was also prohibited from possessing an open container of alcohol anywhere within the area of Huddersfield town centre protected by a Public Space Protection Order.

Hackin had been jailed for eight weeks on April 18 for breach of his CBO but continued to breach it again on his release from prison. He was arrested by officers from the Huddersfield Town Centre Team on June 14 and sentenced at Leeds Magistrates Court the next day.

Sergeant Graham Watson of the Huddersfield Town Centre Team, said: "We welcome this sentencing which demonstrates that CBO's are taken seriously and that they will be enforced by West Yorkshire Police. Andrew Hackin has caused real distress to shoppers, retail staff and commuters in Huddersfield through his behaviour and was forbidden from entering a defined part of the town centre after noon each day as a result of this.

“His sentencing will provide a welcome respite for them. Officers from the Huddersfield Town Centre Team continue to address other matters, and continue in our efforts to make the town centre a safer place for people to live and work in."
