A huge fire has broken out at a former Coatbridge primary school this evening.

Firefighters are currently battling the blaze at the former Gartsherrie School on Gartsherrie Road in the Lanarkshire town. Crews rushed to the scene at around 7.45pm today (Sunday, June 9).

Images from the scene show the building engulfed in flames with plumes of smoke billowing into the sky. The smoke can be seen from Glasgow city centre.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) has confirmed they are in attendance at the scene.

A spokesperson for the SFRS said: "We are currently in attendance in the area for a building fire. We received the call at 7.45pm."

Gartsherrie Primary School closed in 2010 as part of a programme of four school closures across North Lanarkshire with pupils being transferred to Townhead and Greenhill primaries.
