Hull College crowned 'Centre of the Year' after dramatic turnaround

Hull College has been recognised with a prestigious national award following a remarkable turnaround from near bankruptcy to becoming one of the country's top performing institutions.

The college, which has undergone an inspiring journey towards success, was named 'Centre of the Year' at the Aspiration Awards, run by vocational and technical learning leader NCFE.

Following its transformation, Hull College has seen a significant improvement in student achievement, earning its first 'Good' grade from Ofsted in many years, with 'Outstanding' recognition for adult provision and personal development and 'Strong' for skills.

Microsoft Translate and innovative curriculum design have placed Hull College at the forefront of the fourth industrial revolution, with over 300 small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) receiving training on AI-based productivity.

Moreover, learners are making a significant impact beyond the college, contributing over 8,000 hours of service and volunteering across the Hull and Humber regions. This involvement in various projects and activities enriches their educational experience.

However, the transformation at Hull College isn't just about academic achievements and student success. It also includes a revitalised culture and staff team. The college now boasts a vibrant staff council that regularly engages with senior leaders to enhance the experience of fellow staff members.

In addition to its impressive CPD offering, the college has introduced new initiatives such as free breakfast for all staff and reformed terms and conditions. These changes position it as an employer of choice and have resulted in a 10% reduction in staff turnover.

Financial stability is another key aspect of Hull College's transformation. In just 18 months, the college managed to turn a large operating deficit into a balanced budget without any need for restructuring. This remarkable achievement led to the college being formally moved out of government intervention in December 2023.
