Hungary have confirmed that their striker Barnabas Varga is 'stable' in hospital after the player was stretchered off the pitch during his side's game against Scotland, following a collision which saw him suffer a serious injury.

The second half was well underway when Hungary got a free kick and, as the ball was played into the box, both Varga and Scottish keeper Angus Gunn ended up on the ground. And, while a slightly dazed Gunn got to his feet, Varga remained on the ground, with his teammates rushing to his side.

Moments later, protective sheets were brought onto the pitch by medical staff inside the stadium, to shields the player from view as he was attended to. BBC viewers watching Match of the Day coverage were left 'disgusted' when a replay of the collision then aired, before the live feed then cut away from the pitch and commentator Steve Wilson remarked that one of Varga's teammates was in tears.

The match, which ended up being won 1-0 by Hungary, was stopped for a lengthy period as everyone expressed huge concern for Varga and willed him to be alright and, around half an hour after the full time blew, an update on Varga's condition was released by Hungary, in which reps confirmed that he was 'stable and conscious after being taken to hospital in Stuttgart for further medical treatment.

After complaints from BBC viewers about the replay flooded in, Match of the Day host Gabby Logan apologised as she addressed the situation live on air. She remarked: "We were as shocked as you when they replayed that incident. There are protocols around that kind of thing after Christian Eriksen three years ago and we were very surprised that UIFA chose to play in that replay,. which is why we cut away immediately to a wide angle as soon as we could."
