John Barrowman has revealed that his husband Scott Gill had a secret code phrase that helped to calm him down when he fell out with Noel Edmonds on I’m a Celebrity.

The pair had a few cross words when Edmonds made his late entrance to camp and ruled that Barrowman should stop scratching his crotch, but the American star got over it with the help of his husband’s wise words.

Barrowman told This Morning: “Scott has an expression that he wrote in his letter to me – take a deep breath, count to 10, and think about eating a sandwich. He always says to me when I get a little snippy, ‘We need to get you a sandwich’.

“I just kept thinking if anything was rubbing me the wrong way, ‘You need a sandwich’.”

He went on: “There was only one moment where that happened and it was nothing to do with any individual person.

“It was something I only realised after a really good conversation with Anne (Hegerty) – a change, if it’s thrown in front of me really quickly, upsets me.

“I had to let go of the controlling aspect of my personality and just think there’s nothing I can do.”

Talking about the row with Edmonds, he said: “The camp, which was a very calm situation to begin with, was thrown into upheaval because now we had an emperor and the rules all changed. That’s what freaked me out.

“Emily (Atack) said to me, ‘I thought I lost you there’. I said, ‘No, I just needed 24 hours to think about why I reacted that way because I need to change that and work on that.'”

He confirmed there was no more trouble in paradise, adding: “Noel and I have exchanged numbers, he’s going to come and visit me in Palm Springs.”

Barrowman also said that he felt lucky to have found a close friendship with Atack through I’m a Celebrity.

He said: “I had Emily beside me, she and I have created this great friendship.

“We both have this idea that you’ve got to let the kid inside you stay alive. She was like a diamond in the rough. She kept me going, I kept her going.

“Emily is going to be part of my life for a long, long, long time.”
