'Incredibly dangerous' M4 drunk driver caught speeding more than 100mph

An "incredibly dangerous" drunk driver who was caught speeding more than 100mph on M4 has been banned from driving for more than three years. Christopher Chitima was behind the wheel of an Audi when he was driving above the speed limit at junction 15 for Swindon towards Bristol at around 1.15am on May 28.

His actions caught the attention of an unmarked police vehicle and they chased Chitima on the motorway. Officers followed the vehicle, during which speeds of more than 100mph were recorded.

Chitima was stopped near to junction 16. He was subsequently breathalysed and blew a reading of 40 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 milligrammes.

Chitima, aged 31 and of Broad Walk in Knowle was arrested and taken to custody. At Swindon Magistrates' Court, he pleaded guilty to drink driving.

He was disqualified from driving for 40 months, fined £384 and required to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and court costs of £85.

PC Tom Webster of the Roads Policing Unit said: “These are incredibly dangerous and reckless speeds to be driving at on any occasion, let alone when you have been drinking. There is simply no excuse for Chitima’s actions and he now faces a lengthy spell off the roads.

“Our Roads Policing Unit will continue to target and clamp down on drink and drug drivers on our roads as we know it can and does lead to fatal collisions.”
