We know what (at least part of) Avengers: Infinity War is going to look like – and we'll know even more by the end of today – but we can't say we spotted the '90s references.

Yep, according to directors the Russo Brothers, Infinity War takes some surprising inspiration from a couple of classic '90s heist films. Because why not?

Talking to /Film about the tone of the film, Anthony Russo explained that Infinity War has a "very unique" vibe to it because of all the intersecting characters.

"I think it's impulsive, I would say it's an adventure film," he continued, before going on to reveal that the pair were actually inspired by "'90s crime films" while working on the script.

"So it's got an energy to it, a bit of a smash and grab energy," he added, before brother Joe confirmed: "Like the heist genre."

Name-checking two specific movies, Anthony revealed that he and Joe went to Two Days in the Valley and George Clooney and J-Lo's Out of Sight for inspiration.

"We always look to movies for an inspiration for the energy that we're looking for, or a narrative construct that we want to be inspired by," Anthony explained.

Of course, Infinity War isn't the first movie in the MCU to be situated in a decade's mood or vibe – Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok was unashamedly, and awesomely, '80s.

If Infinity War isn't going to boast a thoroughly '90s soundtrack then, we're going to be pissed.

Avengers: Infinity War hits UK cinemas on April 26 and US cinemas on April 27.
