Intriguing £46m Nico Williams release clause and long-term Newcastle targets wanted by Euro big guns

Newcastle United continue to search for a winger that will add quality and pace to Eddie Howe's attack next season.

With Miguel Almiron looking like a contender to leave St James' Park in order to balance the PSR books, both Michael Olise and Athletic Bilbao's Nico Williams have been spoken about as possible targets for the Magpies. The battle for both players is intense and Newcastle are at a slight disadvantage because they can't offer Champions League football.

Here's today's latest trawl through the transfer stories making headlines around the world.

Nico Williams

The 21-year-old showed what he could do in Spain's 1-0 win over Italy at the Euros last night and is now beginning to attract interest from a clutch of clubs. Aston Villa, Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle are all credited with interest in the winger today.

And it has emerged - via the Athletic - that Williams has a release clause of around £46m. That means he would come in slightly cheaper than Olise but there is certain to be big competition for his signature.

Williams made his stance clear on talk of his future and is playing the transfer game perfectly this summer. He said: "I’m very happy. And what I want to do is focus on the European Championship 100 per cent. Otherwise, I don’t know what’s going to happen. I have told my agent that I don’t want to know anything until the end of the European Championship."

Conor Gallagher

Gallagher has been a long-term target for Newcastle but a central midfielder has dropped down the pecking order in terms of priorities for Eddie Howe this summer. With Sandro Tonali due back from his ban for illegal betting and Joelinton fit again, Howe will hope he can pick a dream midfield combination of Bruno Guimaraes, the former Hoffenheim man and the Italian international next term.

Gallagher is set to be sold by Chelsea with a price tag of around £40million after failing to agree a new deal at Stamford Bridge. Newcastle did scout Gallagher towards the end of last season but the latest club taking a look at the England international is Atletico Madrid in La Liga.

Teun Koopmeiners

Another player that head of recruitment Steve Nickson has put in many hours when scouting. The 26-year-old midfielder looks set to leave Europa League winners Atalanta this summer and produced 15 goals while also providing seven assists

As Newcastle turn their attentions to more attacking outlets, Juventus are looking to muscle in on a €60m deal for the Dutchman.

James Trafford

Chronicle Live brought you the story yesterday that Newcastle's bid for Trafford had been rejected because it was below the figure that Burnley paid Man City for. It is understood that the Magpies have yet to return to the Turf Moor club with an improved offer for the England Under-21 keeper.
