One person was taken to hospital after an incident at a biofuel plant that saw the ambulance service's hazardous area response team activated.

Emergency services were called to the Greenergy biofuel plant on Seal Sands Road in Billingham this morning (Tuesday, May 7).

Cleveland Police, ambulance crews and the Great North Air Ambulance all attended Greenergy - a supplier and distributor of fossil and renewable transportation fuels.

A NEAS spokesperson said: “We received a call this morning (Tuesday 7 May) at 8.54am to reports of a person injured at an address on Seal Sands Road in Middlesbrough.

"We dispatched an ambulance crew, a specialist paramedic, a clinical team leader, a crew from our Hazardous Area Response Team (HART), and requested support from our colleagues at the Great North Air Ambulance Service (GNAAS) who attended by road.

"One patient was taken to the James Cook University Hospital for further treatment.”

A spokesperson for the Great North Air Ambulance said: "We were activated at 9am to an incident near Hartlepool, our doctor-led team drove to the incident in our Rapid Response Vehicle and arrived on scene at 9.22am.

"The team worked with the North East Ambulance Service to stabilise the patient before accompanying them by road to hospital.

A Greenergy spokesperson said: "We can confirm an incident took place this morning at our Teesside biofuel plant.

"Ambulance have been in attendance, and someone has been taken to hospital. We are monitoring the situation, and a full investigation is underway."

Cleveland Police and The Health and Safety Executive have also been approached for comment.
