Jack Draper narrowly loses maiden semi-final to Maxime Cressy at Eastbourne

• The British No 4 was defeated by Franco-American Maxime Cressy, who won 7-6 (7-5), 6-6 (2-7), 6-3

• After falling behind in the first tie-break, Draper held his nerve to win the second set tie-break and push the match to a third set

• Draper's match against Cressy not only represented the furthest stage he had reached in an ATP event, but was also the longest competitive match of his adult career

Jack Draper's dreams of a maiden ATP Tour final were extinguished following an agonising three-set loss to Maxime Cressy at the Rothesay International in Eastbourne.

In a tense encounter containing just a single a break of serve, world No 60 Cressy continued his conquering of the homegrown players to edge through 7-6 (5) 6-7 (2) 6-3.

The France-born American, who defeated Cameron Norrie and Dan Evans in the previous rounds, will face either 2019 winner Taylor Fritz or reigning champion Alex de Minaur in Saturday's final.

Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova will play defending champion Jelena Ostapenko in the final of the women's draw following their respective straight-set wins over Beatriz Haddad Maia and Camila Giorgi earlier on Friday.

It only took two hours and twenty minutes, but we have our first break. Will this open the proverbial floodgates? Draper hopes so, sending an aggressive return way out of Cressy's reach. He then nets himself, screaming with frustrating. Draper sends a popping half-volley glancing past Cressy, taking him 15-30 ahead, and when Cressy's next ball goes long, he cries out again.

Draper can't return a stinging serve of Cressy's, shouting 'no!' repeatedly as he nets it. He has one last chance, at 30-40, for a break point, but his attempt goes long, and it's deuce. Cressy wins the advantage with a neatly-place ball on the far sidelines, but Draper drags him back to deuce with a straight shot which Cressy can't meet cleanly, growing frustrated himself.

Draper nets the ball, as Cressy urges his team to emote more: tensions running high on both sides of the net. Cressy holds his serve, after Draper finds with net weakly.

Draper moves forbiddingly up to the net on his opening serve, which rushes Cressy as he hits a shot starkly out. Sent far back, Cressy doesn't sufficiently weight his return, which lands comfortably in the net, but rather than make further gains, Draper hits an unfocused shot wildly wide.

Draper falls behind, hitting the net cord, and it's break point for Cressy. Draper's serve delivers its consistent strength as Cressy falters on the return, netting the ball and taking Draper a whisper away from danger. But Cressy takes the advantage again, and Draper must serve his way out of trouble.

There's a razor's edge separating these two. Draper opens hungrily, positioning a cross-court backhand over the net on an unreturnable angle, but Cressy bites back, hitting a huge serve which keeps Draper in the corner and unable to reach a zippy forehand in time. Guarding the net, Cressy sends another whippy shot past Draper.

Cressy isn't moving as fluidly as he has been, even though this is Draper's longest ever match, rather than his. But he still manages to ace Draper, holding his serve comfortably.

Draper double faults with his opening serve, before serving a crisp ace for 15 all. He bookends the ace with another double fault, grappling to regain his rhythm. At the net, Draper crouches to coax a ball gently over the net - Cressy can reach it, unbelievably, but his return is airy and long. Cressy has the mental edge, however, and reaches break point. But Draper doesn't allow him to hold on to it for long, playing another ace.

At deuce, Draper's serve forces Cressy into returning vertically, up and out of the court, but squanders his advantage by hitting long. Draper gets unlucky, playing a thoughtfully-positioned rally before flunking right into the net. But he negates the advantage by keeping Cressy at the back of the court with aggressive hitting, until Cressy finds the net himself. Draper wins back the advantage as Cressy hits long during a defensive rally.

He sends Cressy off to the sidelines, and Cressy struggles as the ball hangs in the air, belting it into the net, as the players reach deuce. Draper gains the advantage, drawing out one the match's few rallies, and holding Draper at the back of the court. With a final ace, Draper wins the game - which looked improbable only a few moments earlier.

Draper retaliates sending Cressy a wide shot which he can't reach, sending the ball to net with almost the tip of the racket. But with an ace, and a strong return, Cressy takes back control of the game and holds his service.

Make no mistake, the British number four hasn't had an easy time of it in the draw. Most significantly, he beat Diego Schwartzman, world number 15, and the competition's fourth seed, in a knife's-edge 7-5 7-6 in the round of 16.

Cressy, meanwhile, has form breaking British hearts, defeating Dan Evans in the round of 16, and number one seed Cameron Norrie in the quarter-finals. Things got quite spicy between Evans and the Franco-American, and Cressy later said in an interview that he would be looking to beat "all" the British players at Eastbourne.

Hello and welcome to semi-final coverage from Eastbourne as Briton Jack Draper takes on American Maxime Cressy.

Draper made this week the best run of his career with a comprehensive 6-3, 6-3 win over compatriot Ryan Peniston on Thursday and is now aiming to reach his first ever tour-level final.

The slight downside to Draper's run is less time to prepare for Wimbledon, but the 20-year-old says he is focusing on the tournament at hand.

"There is no doubt that, obviously, if you go deep this week it is going to have a bit of a knock‑on effect for Wimbledon, but at the same time my mindset is not to get to Wimbledon, it is to try and do as well as I can here, and we'll worry about being tired after the tournament," he said.

"But in a positive way I get a lot of matches, I've obviously gained a lot of confidence this week which I can take into future tournaments and I am not thinking about that just yet, I've just got to see how I do the next couple of days."

In the Wimbledon draw earlier today, Draper was drawn against Belgian wild card Zizou Bergs - winner of the recent second-tier Challenger tournament in Ilkley.

British hopes at Wimbledon will be high after an encouraging draw for the home players led by Emma Raducanu and Andy Murray.

Remarkably, of the 17 British representatives in the men's and women's singles, not one drew a seeded player in the first round.

Raducanu, who is hopeful of overcoming a side strain in time, has one of the trickier draws against experienced Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.

Murray, who is unseeded, has drawn Australian James Duckworth in round one.

Ninth seed Cameron Norrie, who is bidding to reach the fourth round at a grand slam for the first time, will open against Spanish veteran Pablo Andujar, while Katie Boulter and Ryan Peniston, who have also both been in excellent form on the grass, meet Clara Burel and Henri Laaksonen, respectively.

Sonay Kartal, who has surged up the rankings this season, takes on Danka Kovinic with the carrot of a potential second-round clash against Swiatek while fellow debutant Alastair Gray takes on former junior champion Tseng Chun-hsin.

Of the other British players in action, Heather Watson faces German Tamara Korpatsch, Harriet Dart meets Spain's Rebeka Masarova, Katie Swan and Jodie Burrage both take on Ukrainians in Marta Kostyuk and Lesia Tsurenko, respectively, Liam Broady plays Lukas Klein of Slovakia and Jay Clarke faces American Christian Harrison.
