Noomi Rapace has compared acting to spying — and not only because both involve taking on a different identity.

The Swedish star, who lives in west London, says both professions can be lonely.

Rapace, 39, plays a German intelligence agent in the second series of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan on Amazon Prime. She and her co-star, John Krasinski, filmed the show in Venezuela, America, Russia and London.

The actress, who spoke to members of the CIA in preparation, said some aspects of acting mirrored the work of secret agents.

She told the Evening Standard: “The agents exist in the shadows. You can’t tell anyone what you’re doing. You’re really lonely, you’re in a different country, you’re away from your family. We’re kind of doing the same as actors but at least we can tell people what we’re doing.”

She added: “Imagine being in another country and you’re pretending you’re someone else. You’ve got an alias, everything is a game, you can’t tell anyone, you can’t tell your family.

“So it’s really interesting to discover that side and see how similar it is to what we do. But at the same time we can have a premiere and say, ‘Yeah that’s why I was so weird last time.’”

Rapace said her favourite place to spend time in when she is back in the UK is her own house.

“For me, when I’m home, It’s a luxury to be home so I just hide in my house,” she said. “I bring people to my house. I say to my friends, ‘Come and eat here, come dance here.’

"I love London, I get very emotional every time I land, I tear up. I truly love this city.”

Series two of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is on Amazon Prime Video now.
