#Jamfirst: The Queen settles long-running debate over how to make a cream tea

The Queen appears to have solved a long-running debate over whether jam or cream should be spread on a scone first.

Former Royal chef Darren McGrady revealed on Twitter that the 91-year-old monarch enjoys a cream tea with jam slathered first on the baked goods.

He wrote: “The Queen always had home-made Balmoral jam first ( @tiptree little scarlet when we ran out) with clotted cream on top at Buckingham Palace garden parties in the Royal tea tent and all Royal tea parties.”

The row comes after the National Trust faced backlash for featuring a picture of a scone covered in cream then jam as part of a Mother’s Day promotion.

The advert for a cream tea at Lanhydrock, in Bodmin, sparked an angry backlash from Cornish locals furious that it showed a traditional Devonshire cream tea.

One person replied to the advert on the venue’s Facebook page and said: “Nnnooooo surly an early April fool joke... cream first what are you doing Lanhydrock....YOU ARE IN CORNWALL.”

Another added: “Is Lanhydrock in Devon now?”

Landydrock apologised for the “heinous error” and vowed staff would wear badges saying "#JamFirst".

A statement said: “We'd like to sincerely apologise for any offence caused by a recent scone-shot shown on the page.”

According to the Sun, Buckingham Palace declined to comment on Mr McGrady’s tweet.

The Evening Standard has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment.
