Jason Donovan has explained why he won't be returning to Neighbours anytime soon – at least not alone.

The actor played Scott Robinson on the Australian soap between 1985 and 1989 and his storyline in which he married Charlene Mitchell, played by Kylie Minogue, basically broke TV viewing figures forever.

However, Donovan doesn't feel a comeback would be the right move, as he thinks the publicity would be bigger than his return itself.

"It doesn't feel like something I need to do," he told the Radio Times. "I have absolute respect for the show and what it's given me, but the problem with going back would be that the publicity becomes bigger than the moment."

But he did admit he could be tempted back if Kylie or Guy Pearce, who played Mike Young, also made surprise returns to the soap.

"If Guy, Kylie and me agreed we'd all do three episodes, that'd be different because we'd be sharing it," he said.

"It's a bit like Friends. If all of them come back, then it works. If it's just Joey, it doesn't."

Neighbours airs weekdays at 12.50pm and 6pm on Channel 5 (UK) and 6.30pm on 10 Peach (Australia).
