Jay Slater's mum holds 'talks' with Tenerife police after 'horrible' online speculation

Jay Slater's mum has begged police not to give up the search after they called off the hunt for the missing teen in Tenerife. Police in Tenerife have said the unsuccessful two-week search in the mountains for a missing British teenager is now over, although the case remains open.

A source close to the family said: “The family want to be sure the police aren’t giving up on Jay. They are in constant contact with them about the case.” Jay's mum Debbie reportedly held a "summit" with cops in the Canary Islands over the phone.

A judicial source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said: “There is no evidence of criminality at this stage in this case. That’s not to say things won’t change because the case remains open and investigations are ongoing. But right now that’s the situation."

Another source said: “The Civil Guard don’t have to tell the judge about everything officers are doing, but will be keeping her updated on case progress and of course update her on any significant developments.” In a previous interview with the Guardian, Slater’s mother, Debbie Duncan, described the online speculation as “horrible” and said Spanish police had told her it may hinder their investigation.

“I think as well they have actually said that there’s too much noise, that’s affecting it,” she said. Ms Duncan also said Spanish police were concerned that “noise” around the case may have a negative impact on the search. “They have actually said that there’s too much noise, that’s affecting it,” she said.

“They’ve got all the plans, their locations. They have got this map they were showing us, shaded different colours.” She went on: “It’s difficult with all the Spanish police and British police, they have to let the Spanish police do the investigation, but I want somebody to come out here.”
