Supernatural star Jensen Ackles has admitted that he "had trouble digesting" the show's conclusion.

The upcoming 15th season is to be Supernatural's last – a spin-off is not on the horizon, in case you were wondering – and naturally you'd imagine cast members might have mixed feelings.

But according to Ackles, he had to make "a few phone calls" to help wrap his head around things.

Reflecting on his reaction to the scripts, the Dean Winchester star told Digital Spy and other media at San Diego Comic-Con: "To be honest, I had trouble digesting it. It took me a while to understand.

"It didn't come to me on my own – I made a few phone calls to some folks to get their opinion, and asked them, 'Why am I tripping over this?' and I realised I'm just too close to it.

"I'm too close to these guys. I'm too close to the story," he reiterated. "And any sense of finale to that... I just wasn't going to accept it."

Luckily, it sounds like Ackles has finally warmed towards the outcome, as he added: "I've gotten some clarity on why this is a great way to go and that's given me a lot of comfort".

Supernatural airs on The CW in the UK and on E4 in the UK.
