Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is as unpopular as President Donald Trump among Brits, a poll has found.

Research carried out by GfK found that just 17% of Brits approve of the job that Corbyn is doing as the leader of the opposition and 58% disapprove.

Of those surveyed, 18% approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president and 60% disapprove.

Theresa May fared far better in the survey: The Prime Minister had a 46% approval rating, 4% higher than that of the government overall.

GfK Research Director Keiran Pedley said: ‘Whilst Donald Trump’s approval rating among British adults will be the least of the President’s worries following his healthcare struggles last week, it will be of great concern to Labour supporters that Jeremy Corbyn’s approval rating among Brits is no better.

‘With Theresa May clearly more popular than the Government as a whole and the Conservatives significantly ahead in the polls, it looks like Labour is a long way from power.’

The latest poll of voting intentions by YouGov give the Tories a yawning 16-point lead over Labour, which has been dogged by accusations of infighting and divisions in recent weeks.

Corbyn has been forced to call for unity within his party in recent weeks, as accusations of a hard-left plot to overthrow him emerged, putting the future of the party at risk.

The comparison with Donald Trump is hardly a flattering one; he has the lowest approval ratings of any US President in history, following a tumultuous first couple of months in the White House.

His leadership has been tarred with accusations of nepotism, after he gave his daughter Ivanka a West Wing office and high level security clearance, despite having no official position, and created a senior job for his son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Last month, his presidency was rocked by the revelation that the FBI is investigating links between Trump’s election team and Russia’s efforts to interfere in the 2016 US election.
