Jewel Says Son Kase, 12, Worries If He's Doing an 'OK Job Being a Teenager' (Exclusive)

During the ‘Food & Wine’ Classic in Aspen, the musician tells PEOPLE that her son is planning to tour with her this summer

Jewel wears many hats — singer, songwriter, activist — but being "Mom" is her favorite.

The '90s folk icon, who performed at Aspen Magazine’s 50th anniversary party during the annual Food & Wine Classic in Aspen on June 13, tells PEOPLE about the special bond she has with her son Kase, 12.

“He's really interesting and quirky and creative and very thoughtful," the four-time Grammy nominated artist says proudly of Kase, whom she shares with ex-husband Ty Murray,

"We have a lot of fun and he's cute,” adds Jewel, 50. “He said to me the other day, he goes like, ‘Mom, I hope I'm doing an OK job being a teenager.’ I was like, ‘Oh my God. I can't. You need to go be bad!’”

This summer, the mother-son duo will celebrate him officially becoming a teen when he turns 13 in July. He may even hop on stage during Jewel's co-headlining North American tour with Melissa Etheridge.

“[Kase] will tour with me a little this summer, and I think he'll sing,” Jewel tells PEOPLE. “He doesn't want to play drums this time, but he does want to sing a little.”

She and Kase have performed in the past, like when they sweetly duetted her song "Hands" for the Masked Singer's holiday special in 2021. Jewel said her son has “no nerves” when it comes to being on stage. But despite that — and his natural musical talent — Jewel said that she doesn't think "this is going to be his career."

Recently, the singer-songwriter performed a special duet with another artist. On April 9, the final night of Olivia Rodrigo’s Madison Square Garden Guts world tour show, the 21-year-old welcomed Jewel onstage for a duet of her 1995 hit "You Were Meant for Me."

When asked about other current musicians she would like to perform with, Jewel was quick to answer: “It's a great era right now with women. I love Lana Del Rey. I love Billie Eilish.”

She explains that these collaborative performances have not always been a part of the music industry. “I feel like back in the '90s, people just wouldn't get on stage with each other. So it's kind of neat now that that's such a big part of the culture is getting people up," she says.

On top of being a mother and a musical icon, Jewel prioritizes her work in the mental health world. She hosts her #NotAlone Dinner Series as part of her Inspiring Children Foundation nonprofit.

“It's really a rewarding job,” she says. “Being a musician's so fun, but helping people is just way more fun.”

The intimate dinners, which take place in Las Vegas, Miami, Italy, New York and Aspen, are meant to gather people to discuss and raise money for mental health resources. Plus, Jewel tops off the dinner with a performance, of course.

“I have access to a lot of fun experiences because of my life," she says, "and so we decided to try and harness that and create this #NotAlone Dinner Series that supports mental health and gives people a chance to come together and have meaningful conversations in a fun way."

The Food & Wine Classic in Aspen is taking place now June 14-16.
