JK Rowling Loses £7million In Yacht Sale

We’ve all done it: You make a frivolous purchase then leave it untouched at the back of a cupboard somewhere, before whacking it on eBay for a fraction of the price.

But that’s nothing compared to Harry Potter author JK Rowling’s recent shopping spree.

The 51-year-old has just offloaded a rather fancy looking superyacht for a cool £17m. Sounds like a good bit of business – until you find out that’s a whopping £7m less than she paid for it back in January.

The swanky 47m long ship, called the Amphitrite, has a pretty colourful history. It turns out JK Rowling bought the boat from Hollywood legend Johnny Depp, who ended up renaming it TWICE before handing over the wheel to the Harry Potter author.

At first it was called Vajoliroja, an unpronouncable mash up of his own name alongside that of ex-wife Vanessa Paradis and kids Lily Rose and Jack. Later it became Amphitrite, presumably in a bid to entice Amber Heard on board by erasing all those awkward family connections.

Depp gave the boat a bohemian Art Deco makeover in 2009 at a reported cost of £5m. Rowling is said to have become smitten by the vessel after her family chartered it for a holiday soon afterwards.

The yacht has enough room for 10 guests, with five bedrooms as well as spacious rooms for dining and entertainment. “Inspired by the gentlemen’s yachts of the 1930s she invokes the romance and glamour of a by-gone era,” trills the sales blurb on the website. “It’s all there: The long overhangs, the clipper bow, the funnel, the counter stern, and – as once noted – enough teak and mahogany to fill a Rothschild library’
