Jodie Whittaker wants Lydia West to replace her on 'Doctor Who'.

The 39-year-old actress has starred as the titular Time Lord on the BBC sci-fi series since 2017, but is set to bow out of the role later this year, and she thinks 'Years and Years' star Lydia would "absolutely smash it" as her successor.

She said: "Who do I think will take over from me as the Doctor? Lydia West would absolutely smash it. But I don't know! I'm just going to pick an actress who I think is really exciting and I think would be phenomenal. Lydia West. If I had the power!"

The former 'Broadchurch' star - who is expecting her second child with husband Christian Contreras after welcoming a daughter with him back in 2015 - added that the "joy" in casting a role such as The Doctor is that no-one ever really knows who the big name is until it is announced.

She told Radio Times magazine: "I think the joy of the role is that you don't really know until it's announced. And then you think, 'Yeah, of course!'"

Lydia's 'It's A Sin' co-star Omari Douglas, Michael Sheen and Michaela Coel are among the big names touted to take on the coveted role.

Pop star Olly Alexander, 31, also starred alongside Lydia and Omari in 'It's A Sin' - which was written by returning 'Doctor Who' showrunner Russell T Davies - and although he was heavily rumoured to be stepping into Jodie's shoes, the 'King' hitmaker has consistently played down any suggestions of taking over.

Back In January, he said: "I definitely am not Doctor Who, and I’m not going to be Doctor Who. Promise! It's not happening. I can tell you I'm definitely not doing it!"
