TV presenter Joe Swash has joked that being in the delivery room with his partner Stacey Solomon had him worried they were having twins.

Discussing the birth of their son Rex on White Wine Question Time, he told podcast host Kate Thornton that he was keen to see the placenta as he’d never seen one before.

“I was pretty shocked by the whole thing,” he revealed. “I thought we'd had twins. I was like, 'Aah, at least we got one good one'.” Before adding: “Nooo... I didn't think that really.”

Despite being keen to see the placenta, Joe didn’t embrace every aspect of his long-time girlfriend’s labour.

Appearing on the podcast alongside Joe, Stacey said there were some tense moments at the birth, especially at the point where she had to have her waters broken.

“At one point we were in the labour ward in the room and they were breaking my waters because I was dilating, but my waters were still there,” she said.

“It's not very pretty! 'Just relax', they say and you're like, 'OK, go!' and they've got a giant coat hanger about to rip your waters out and Joe was doing this [taps on the table]. And I was like 'Who is tapping on the wall?' I lost it!”

Joe said the tapping was so he wouldn’t hear Stacey’s waters breaking.

“I don't want to hear that!” exclaimed Joe, “I don't want to see it either. So, I leant against the wall so I couldn't see it and I was just going [taps against the wall]. I thought I'd look at a wall and bang on the wall and yeah... that set Stacey off!”

Stacey laughed: “So, he doesn't want to hear my waters break, but he wants to see that ugly brain of a placenta that's just come out!"

Joe admitted the birth of his son Rex in May of this year was a struggle as it was a bit of a surprise – Stacey went into labour two weeks before her due date.

He said: “It was first thing in the morning, and I was asleep and she [Stacey] didn't even say, 'Joe, I'm having some contractions'. I got, 'We're going to go to the hospital!' I woke up thinking, 'Oh my God!' I thought we had two weeks still.

“We didn't have a bag packed, we had nothing. We had to get all the baby stuff from Mothercare across the road because we had no bag with us.”

Stacey, who has two other children, said she just knew she had to get to hospital: “I knew as soon as I've got those pains, I was like, 'They're getting really bad, really quick. We've got to go!' And then Joe was just a mess!”

Once at the hospital, Joe thought he could enjoy some of Stacey’s gas and air to help him calm down, but the Loose Woman had other ideas.

“When he asked for my gas and air, I was like, 'Are you joking me?',” she told Kate. “And at one point I was like, 'Mum, get him out. Don't let him have it!'”

The TV star recently announced on her Instagram account that she’s about to launch her own podcast, where she’ll speak about all aspects of motherhood, including the birth of Rex.
