Joey Essex's family have weighed in on the Love Island controversy over whether he had ever actually split from Grace Jackson, appearing to rubbish the rumours as they said they had never met her.

The TOWIE star is currently in the Love Island villa and shocked viewers earlier this week by dropping partner Samantha Kenny to get together with ex Grace Jackson who had arrived as a bombshell - leaving some fans wondering whether it was all a set up for the show.

But when Essex's nan Linda and cousin Chloe Sims appeared on Friday's Lorraine, they shut down the speculation by claiming they didn't know anything about Jackson.

Joey Essex has outraged Love Island fans this week who are convinced his previous relationship with bombshell Grace Jackson had never ended.

When Jackson arrived in the ITV2 dating show's villa as a bombshell, Essex promptly dropped partner Samantha Kenny for his ex - but some of his comments since then have led viewers to believe that the whole situation was a set up and he and Jackson had never split.

Now, Essex's nan Linda and cousin Chloe Sims have shared their take on things with the Lorraine show, where they claimed never to have met Jackson before.

Host Christine Lampard asked them about Kenny and Linda said: "I did feel for her because you could tell her that she really liked him. And to have that happen on set, it's quite sad.

Lampard then asked Sims whether she knew Jackson and she replied: "No, I hadn't met her. I hadn't heard of her. I just saw like everyone else did when she arrived in there and Joey was super excited and he said that he knew her, we didn't know of it."

Asked how she was finding watching her grandson kissing other Islanders in the villa, Linda admitted: "Well, you just have to ignore it."

The TV star's family also described him as "really easy to get on with" and "a really nice boy".

Essex's relatives also lifted the lid on his real motivations for going on Love Island, as Linda claimed her was looking for "a normal person".

She added: "He's had many girlfriends, but they never last. He's done everything in his short life, he's met a lot of girlfriends, but none of them ever last. And I think he really does want to settle down now."

His cousin and former TOWIE co-star Sims said: "He's actively dating. I would say like he genuinely is looking for love. He has said to us a lot recently that he'd really like to settle down and meet somebody.

"He's quite a homely person as well, like he likes that kind of family feeling. So yeah, I think if it works out with Grace, then I think he would definitely settle down."

Lorraine airs on ITV1 at 9am on weekdays.
