Christmas season 2019 is already in full swing, which means everyone has been eagerly awaiting the John Lewis Christmas advert.

The release of the annual ad has become as big a festive tradition as giving presents on Christmas morning, having a turkey lunch and Not Talking About Brexit With Uncle Steve.

Starting back in 2007, the department store's adverts have found new ways to make us cry each year with the combination of a sweet story and an emotional cover of a classic song.

Dan Smith from Bastille has been enlisted to sing this year's song, taking on an intimate cover of REO Speedwagon's 'Can't Fight This Feeling'.

Previously tipped stars included Lewis Capaldi, George Ezra, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran.

What is the 2019 advert about?

This year's concept revolves around a small dragon called Excitable Edgar. In the ad, a village girl hangs around with her dragon pal, who seems to cause problems everywhere he goes with his fiery breath.

It all comes to a head when he ruins the village's grand Christmas tree unveiling, causing him to retreat. However, the girl brings him back into the fold when he lights a Christmas pudding for the villagers, much to their delight.

Previously, the advert was teased with a brief clip showing a dragon-head shaped door knocker, which a child knocks on before the door starts to open.

What happened in last year's advert?

The 2018 advert 'The Boy and the Piano' focused on Elton John, with the advert depicting his life and career accompanied by a performance of 'Your Song', before ending with the singer receiving his first piano as a child.
