John Mayer criticizes 'deeply flawed' romantic speculation about platonic friendship with Andy Cohen

"The Hollywood Reporter" published a letter the musician wrote to the outlet following its question to Cohen about the pair's friendship.

Singer-songwriter John Mayer has attempted to dull a recent crescendo of the age-old speculation about his platonic friendship with Bravo personality Andy Cohen.

Mayer wrote a letter to The Hollywood Reporter that it published Thursday in which he criticized the outlet's cover story with Cohen that featured a question regarding the idea that "people seem dubious that a straight rock star can have a close, platonic relationship with a gay TV personality."

"I think this is somewhat of a specious premise. First, there is a long and storied history of 'rock stars' (not mocking, just won’t refer to myself as one) befriending gay icons and artists," the 46-year-old "Say" singer wrote.

Mayer continued: "Second, I think that to suggest that people are dubious of a friendship like mine and Andy’s is to undermine the public’s ability to accept and understand diversity in all facets of culture, be it in art or in real life. I’d like to think they’re sophisticated enough to see a relationship like ours without assuming it must include a sexual component. That turns the concept of being gay into an ignorantly two-dimensional one, which I know you know it’s not. I don’t question that at all."

The Grammy winner maintained that he loves "intelligent discourse" and considered his letter to be part of that discussion, though he added: "I bristle at your selectively flimsy logic meant to coax an answer, when the premise itself is so deeply flawed, and quite possibly not even quantitatively true."

He finished the note by saying that "if someone is dubious" of his platonic relationship with Cohen, he doesn't "think that shallow a view deserves clarification by anyone with self respect."

A source close to the situation tells Entertainment Weekly that "Andy had no idea" Mayer was writing the letter to THR. "John shared it with Andy after he had already sent it," the source added.

EW has reached out to THR and representatives for Cohen for comment.

Cohen initially responded to the publication's question with a denial of anything beyond platonic friendship between him and Mayer.

“Let them speculate” Cohen said. “I honestly love John Mayer, and he loves me. But because we are so affectionate to each other, people don’t know what box to put that in. They assume we are sleeping with each other, which we are most definitely not.”

The duo has long shown support for each other, with Mayer even attending — and speaking at — Cohen's Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony in January.
