Jordan Pickford left 'crying' as Newcastle star Kieran Trippier 'battered' by Gareth Southgate

Kieran Trippier inadvertently left his England team-mates 'laughing their heads off' after the Newcastle United defender's captain's speech did not go to plan.

Trippier, who led the Three Lions out at St James' Park last week, skippered his country in front of supporters for the first time against Andorra back in 2021. Although the World Cup qualifier was rather uneventful, on the field at least, Trippier's senior international team-mates have never let him forget what was, in the 33-year-old's own words, a 'horrendous' moment before the game.

"Nobody even knows this so I may as well get it out," Trippier told Lions' Den. "I'm captain and you have to do a speech before in the huddle. Normally it's H [Harry Kane].

"Me and Picks [Jordan Pickford] are really close. I was nervous as it was before being captain for the first time so as I'm doing my speech, I clock eyes with him. He starts bursting out laughing. I lost where I was going. Everyone just started laughing their heads off.

"When I was captain again, every five minutes, him, H, Walks [Kyle Walker] go, 'I can't wait to hear your speech!' I'm thinking, 'I just don't need this right now!'

"I actually felt comfortable because I've done it loads of times at Newcastle but when I'm with these boys, they're coming up to me every five minutes."

Pickford, who was left 'crying' with laughter, revealed that England boss Gareth Southgate 'battered' Trippier for it. "Yeah," the right-back smiled. "Let's just say it's one-all between me and the gaffer."
