What Jose Mourinho needs to do at Tottenham from convincing Harry Kane to stay to sorting the defence

Jose Mourinho has plenty in his in-tray as he begins a new chapter in his career at Tottenham.

Ther Portuguese has been named Mauricio Pochettino's successor in north London and will lead the side in training for the first time on Wednesday afternoon.

Spurs have taken just 14 points from their opening 12 Premier League matches with 'The Special One' taking charge of his first game against West Ham at the London Stadium on Saturday.

Standard Sport looks at the biggest issues for Mourinho to fix in the coming weeks and months.

Sort the defence and away form out

Mourinho earned his stripes initially by making his teams hard to beat and he will need to bring that defensive steel to plug Spurs’s leaky defence. The away form is a major issue, too, and Tottenham’s last away Premier League win was in January at Fulham. Mourinho can correct that at West Ham on Saturday.

Solve the futures of Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld

It was thought the trio’s futures would be solved in the summer, but the situation has rumbled on into this season. One way or another the matter must be put to bed in January — either with the three of them committing to the club or being shown the door.

Help decide what the structure of the club will be going forward

During his time at Manchester United, it was often mentioned how a director of football would be brought in to work with Mourinho. Given the Portuguese boss has now been made head coach — and not manager — at Spurs, the door is open for someone to come in and aid him in the transfer market.

Convince Harry Kane to stay at the club

It was no shock to see Kane lead the tributes to Pochettino today. The striker flourished under the Argentine, but now Spurs must ensure he doesn’t follow him. Mourinho’s first job should be sitting Kane down and telling him how he can achieve his goals with him at the helm.
