Over in the US, the awards ceremony presented by the Screen Actors Guild is in full swing, and coming with the celebrations are waves of disdain towards Donald Trump and his policies.

The show itself was opened with host Ashton Kutcher making a pro-immigration speech, and it wasn't long before more of those taking to stage had something to say about the controversial topic.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the first award of the night, picking up Best Female Actor in a Comedy Series for her role in Veep.

She kicked off her acceptance speech by taking a humorous swing at Trump's unlikely win that got him into the White House.

"Whether the Russians did or did not hack the voting of tonight's SAG Awards, I look out upon the million – or maybe million-and-a-half people – in this room and say 'this award is legitimate, and I won!'

"I'm the winner. The winner is me. Landslide!"

Dreyfus then went on to take a more serious tone, recalling that her family history has relevance to Trump's widely protested ban on Muslim immigration to the US.

"I want you all to know that I am the daughter of an immigrant," she continued.

"My father fled religious persecution in Nazi-occupied France and I am an American patriot, and I love this country, and because I love this country I am horrified by its blemishes – and this immigrant ban is a blemish and it is un-American."

She continued by reading a statement from the Writers Guild of America (WGA) – all of which was met with rapturous and appreciative applause from the SAG Awards audience.
