Kate Garraway has told how her husband Derek Draper vowed, “I won’t let the sun go down on me” after Sir Elton John dedicated his song of the same name to him.

Draper spent more than a year in hospital after falling ill with coronavirus in 2020 and now needs round-the-clock care.

But earlier this year he and Good Morning Britain star Garraway managed to enjoy a night out together to see Sir Elton on his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, where the singer performed Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me as a tribute to them.

Appearing on This Morning, Garraway revealed how the special moment had an emotional impact.

Tearing up, she said: “It’s that moment when you find something that lifts you out of it.

"And when Derek went to sleep that night he said, ‘I won’t let the sun go down on me’."

Dabbing away tears, she went on: “And I just thought, Elton will never know really how much that meant.

“He was wiped out for a week afterwards but he had that and that keeps you going.”

Draper fell ill in March 2020 and returned home to Garraway and their two children, 17-year-old Darcey and Billy, 14, in April 2021.

The TV star said, although it was wonderful to have him home, it was also “really hard”.

She said: “It’s really tough. It's so physically and emotionally draining and you suddenly look down a long tunnel, there is still very much light at the end of the tunnel but you think, ‘I’m not sure how much longer I can do this’."

Garraway, 56, had her own health scare last year when she experienced chest pains.

She said of that time: “I didn’t feel like I was being a great mum, because I was so stretched.

"I didn’t feel like I was being the best advocate for Derek.

"I didn’t feel like I was doing anything right and I thought, 'My God, I can’t even go on air, I’m a useless employee', and you have just one of those massive crunch moments.”

Talking about her life with Draper, she said: “One of the pressures I think is you can never be quite sure that anything is going to work so therefore you are in a constant state of adrenaline.

"Every infection, every medication that is prescribed, is it the right one at the chemist, no it's not, so I’ve got to check it and so consequently you are just sort of holding… well you feel like you are holding a life in your hands and I’m just not sure I’m good enough for that really.”

She said she was very "lucky" because of all the support and help she has had.
