A new Islamic school, regeneration around a train station and a new Lidl are some of the significant developments put before Greater Manchester this week.

The new school for the Rumworth area of Bolton would be independently run and cater for 200 students, plans have confirmed. Over in south Manchester there are plans to expand the Stockport Exchange next to the railway station to provide more office space for what is a more sought after business hub.

A total of 100 more apartments would be built under these plans as well.

In the Heaton Norris area of Stockport, a new Lidl with an in-house bakery have also been tabled.

Here is a breakdown of each borough’s submitted planning applications this week

Bolton

New Islamic school seeks to be ‘catalyst for regeneration’ for whole district

A planned new independent school for 200 pupils has the aim of ‘regenerating a neighbourhood’.

A planning application for the Islamic faith school has been submitted this week for land previously used as a car park at Dinsdale Drive, in the Rumworth area of Bolton.

The application has been lodged by the Hadhrat Shaykh Muhammad Zakariyya Foundation, founded in 2021.

Bury

Plans for spectacular lakeside café with with decking ‘extending over the water’

Plans for a spectacular lakeside café – with a possible outdoor seating deck over the water – have been unveiled.

The café, along with a shop and a rebuilt boathouse are the subject of a planning application by Pilsworth Fishery, which operates three lakes off Moss Hall Road in Bury. The main lake was originally dug in the mid 19th century to serve the Pilsworth Clough Mills bleach works.

The venue is presently used as an angling centre with the three lakes healthily stocked with carp, chub, tench, roach and barbel.

‘College of rugby’ plans for green belt parkland close to M60

A sports club plans to create ‘a college of rugby’ on parkland close to the M60.

Sedgley Rugby Club plans to place five cabins close to their training pitches at Phillips Park, Whitefield. In planning documents published in the past week, the club said the development is to create a dedicated space for a college of rugby, aiming to foster the development for local children through education, sports, and life skills enhancement.

The park is designated green belt land but the club said the cabins would be temporary in nature, could be removed easily and that the creation of the college was within the exceptions for green belt development.

School plans expansion to meet rising demand

A school in Harpurhey is set to expand to meet rising demand for places.

Manchester Communication Academy, on Silchester Drive, hopes to increase the number of pupils per year to 300, meaning it has 1,500 students in total — after it’s emerged some children in the area will need to travel further for the nearest school place. To make that happen, it hopes to build two new teaching blocks and two new multi-use games areas (MUGAs).

One of the proposed blocks will be designed for year seven children, just starting out in secondary education, who will also benefit from ‘an associated playground for recreational activities’. The other will be a science block, with lab rooms available, taking the expansion to 3,154 sqm (33,949 sq ft).

Oldham

No new significant planning applications have been submitted to Oldham Council this week.

Rochdale

Further redevelopment plans for heritage centre

The Touchstones Arts And Heritage Centre could see further development work if the latest round of proposals are approved.

The plans put forward by Rochdale Council would see The Esplanade site would see a number of internal works. This includes replacement of exhibition boards, reinstatement of original ventilation systems, installation of new and replacement heating systems, installation and relocation of internal partitions and installation of new LED lighting systems.

Salford

Plan for new baking competition experience in Salford

There are plans to open a new baking competition experience in Salford.

An application to open The Big Manchester Bake has been submitted, to be located at the New Bailey development, occupying nearly 4,000 sqft of space. If approved, it promises visitors a 'multi award winning engaging 90-minute baking competition experience', as well as hospitality spaces and an outdoor terrace area.

If the proposal is given the green light, it would become the company's fourth UK location, with the others based in London and Birmingham.

Stockport

Plans for new housing estate on Stockport's greenbelt - with up to 80 new homes

There are plans for a new housing estate on Stockport's greenbelt - to build up to 80 new homes.

The development for a 'modern day residential living' area is from WTGB Ltd, in partnership with the Wythenshawe Community Housing Group. All of the planned new homes are set to be designated as 'affordable', with a mix of social rent, shared ownership, and rent to buy.

The proposal is located to the east of Wilmslow Road and Griffin Farm Drive in Heald Green, on a site of 'poor quality grass land' which was previously used for airport car parking and storage.

New Lidl with in-store bakery could open in Stockport

A new Lidl with an in-store bakery could soon open in Stockport, north of the town centre.

Plans for a new Lidl discount foodstore have been proposed as part of a scheme on 111 Wellington Road North in Heaton Norris, which could have up to 98 parking spaces around the site.

The store will include a sales area, warehouse delivery area, chiller room, bakery, manager’s office, staff welfare facilities, and customer toilets.

Plans shared for next phase of transformation around Stockport station

A planning application has been submitted for the next phase of work transforming the area around Stockport railway station.

Known as Stockport Exchange, the area has become a hub for businesses, with more plans to expand and improve the site in place. The next part of the work could see new offices and residential spaces created, spread across up to 33,000 square metres.

The plan could also see up to 100 apartments built in the area.

New children's home planned for Denton

A house in Denton could be transformed into a small specialist care home for up to four children with learning, emotional or behavioural difficulties.

Careright Ltd are seeking permission for the Manchester Road site which would be registered as an Emotional and Behavioural Home. Planning papers said children will undergo a stringent impact risk assessment to ensure they integrate with the local community.

Trafford

Plan to bulldoze one house to build three detached homes

Plans have been submitted to demolish a detached home and replace it with three other ‘self-build’ detached homes.

They have been submitted on behalf of a Mr and Mrs Davies for the bulldozing of 273 Davyhulme Road, Davyhulme in Urmston. Agent, ebrdesigns.com - based in Urmston - says the properties have been designed with a ‘contemporary theme and palette of materials’ and to create ‘high-quality properties’.

Wigan

No new significant planning applications have been submitted to Wigan Council this week.
