Kilmaurs Primary pupil set for Scotland-Hungary Euros mascot duty

A Kilmaurs Primary School pupil is set to lead out Scotland for their crunch Euros clash against Hungary this weekend.

P3 pupil Charlie Sneddon and his dad, Mark, will travel to Germany after winning Lidl GB competition. Parents and guardians were given a chance to enter the competition for a chance to win one of 77 spots on the Lidl Kids Team for their child between the age of six and 10-years-old.

Mark told Ayrshire Live: "The journey began in 1998 when I made a pact with my brother that we would watch Scotland at the next major tournament. Although we had a dream we were not to know the gap between then and now.

"Fast forward to 2024 and the dream was finally a reality but I was no longer alone in my dreams, Charlie my football mad son was part of the journey now. I foolishly made a promise that we would watch Scotland and after the bitter rejection of ticket ballots and eye watering prices for resale tickets, I must have entered 20 competitions to win all manner of Euro goodies and on a standard Tuesday morning I received an email from Lidl kids competition... I was a winner!

"Was it a Scotland top, a football or a basket of groceries. It was even better."

Mark received an email from LIDL kids competition saying: "Congratulations again on winning a place in our UEFA EURO 2024™ Lidl Kids Team. We can’t wait to host you and your little one for an unforgettable experience."

Mark and Charlie will now travel to the finals in Germany, with Lidl covering air-travel and accomodation.

There will be a jam-packed itinerary filled with fun, and educational local experiences, ahead of joining Steve Clarke's side on the pitch in front of tens of thousands of fans at Sunday's big match.

Charlie is a talented young goalkeeper who plays with Galston 2016s and hopes to walk out with Angus Gunn as part of the goalkeeper’s union.

Charlie will be escorted by his dad, the man who was once that boy from 1998 who had the dream.

Mark said: "Someone commented that 'if you put good out in the world then it will come back to you' and with all the work I do within my goalkeeping coaching with the veterans and recovery community this feels like a reward for myself and Charlie for loving football."
