Kim Kardashian’s Met Gala Transformation Throughout the Years: From Floral Givenchy to Gold Versace and More

Kim Kardashian has been through quite a transformation on the Met Gala red carpet. From making her debut in a floor-length long-sleeve gown while pregnant with daughter North West to arriving in a sea of pearls 10 years later, she’s been turning heads at the event since 2013.

2013 Met Gala

• Theme: Punk: Chaos to Couture

• Dress: For her first-ever Met Gala, Kardashian was her then-husband Kanye West’s plus one. She was also pregnant with their daughter North and to show off her baby bump. The then TV personality wore a form-fitting floral dress designed by then Givenchy-designer Riccardo Tisci.

2014 Met Gala

• Theme: Charles James: Beyond Fashion

• Dress: Kardashian elevated a high-slit, strapless dark blue Lanvin gown with contrasting black accessories. She slipped on strappy heels from the same designer and a matching belt that accentuated her waist.

• Shoes: Lanvin

2015 Met Gala

• Theme: China: Through the Looking Glass

• Dress: Next up, she dominated the carpet in a stunning Roberto Cavalli gown featuring a long feather train. West let Kardashian shine as he was by her side in a laid-back black velvet suit.

2016 Met Gala

• Theme: Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology

• Dress: The couple continued with another set of bold looks, except that year, they decided to complement one another with coordinated silver Balmain ensembles that couldn’t have been more on theme. For Kardashian, she sported a shiny high-slit gown that was meant to mimic a suit of armor, while West leveled up his ripped jeans and a white T-shirt with an embellished jacket created by the French luxury fashion house.

2017 Met Gala

• Theme: Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between

• Dress: Kardashian went minimalist with a white Vivienne Westwood off-the-shoulder dress with slight detailing that didn’t overwhelm the silhouette. For her accessories, she opted out of jewelry and wore simple, barely there sandals.

2018 Met Gala 

• Theme: Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination

• Dress: As a nod to the Met Gala’s theme, Kardashian chose a flattering gold Versace gown with two crosses stitched in the front. She took things even further by layering two dainty diamond cross necklaces on top of one another.

• Shoes: Versace

2019 Met Gala 

• Theme: Camp: Notes on Fashion

• Dress: Just when we thought her clothes couldn’t get more form-fitting, Kardashian turned heads in a skin-tight, corseted beaded Thierry Mugler latex dress. She paired the custom piece with transparent sandals that didn’t take any attention away from her look. The combination also made it on our list of Kardashian’s best fashion moments.

2021 Met Gala

• Theme: In America: A Lexicon of Fashion

• Dress: This is Kardashian’s edgiest look yet. Her custom, all-black Balenciaga apparel was complete with an oversize T-shirt dress featuring a long train, gloves, boots, and a mask that covered her entire head. In short, it was a red carpet moment to remember.

2022 Met Gala 

• Theme: In America: An Anthology of Fashion

• Dress: Kardashian and her then-beau Pete Davidson made their debut as a couple at the Met Gala. However, all eyes were on her vintage Jean Louis dress, which was once worn by Marilyn Monroe for her performance at President John F. Kennedy’s birthday in 1962. To fully embody the history of the sparkly gown, Kardashian even completed her glam by dyeing her hair blond.

2023 Met Gala 

• Theme: Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty

• Dress: To honor Lagerfeld, Kardashian wore a Schiaparelli creation adorned with a total of 50,000 pearls. It’s safe to say that the white jewels were the key feature of the look, and she complemented them with matching thin-strapped heeled sandals and a voluminous cape that added a new dimension to the dress.
