Large parts of UK put on flood alert over next 24 hours

The UK is set to be hit by flooding over the next 24 hours with up to 80 millimetres (3.2ins) of rain expected to fall as heavy downpours continue.

According to The Met Offfice, flooding of homes and businesses is possible to due to the persistent wet weather – with a yellow weather warning issued for parts of the UK including the East Midlands, West Midlands, London, East Anglia and the South East.

Parts of Yorkshire have also already been hit by flooding – with footage showing cars as they attempt to battle flood water in Grimsby.

Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue Service has also confirmed it dealt with five incidents of flooding overnight.

Melanie Onn, the MP for Great Grimsby, also shared pictures on Twitter of the waterlogged roads, adding that some were “like a river” and that the water was “over my ankles”.

Now, The Met Office has warned that 20 to 30 millimetres of rain could fall in some places within two or three hours.

‘An area of heavy rain will sink slowly southwards across the east and south east of England during Wednesday’, a Met Office forecaster said.

‘Some transport routes may be affected by localised flooding leading to longer journey times. In addition, flooding of homes and businesses is possible. The heaviest of the rain should gradually become confined to the extreme south east of the UK later in the day.’

The warning comes only three weeks after heavy rain battered the UK and led to flash flooding in the Cornish village of Coverack. Fifty properties were affected and several people had to be rescued from their homes.
