Lauren Sanchez Toned Down the Sizzle In Met Gala Debut with Jeff Bezos

Lauren Sánchez has garnered a lot of nasty social media commentary for her attire, especially for a revealing dress worn to a recent White House state dinner. Just last night, her signature style was on display at a night-before Met Gala party, in honor of Monse designers Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, where Sánchez donned a strapless see-through black lace Monse mega mini — not a usual look for the designers who are also behind the Oscar de la Renta label. Needless to say, the lingerie-like look got more of the same response.

For the actual Met Ball red carpet — a first Met stairs walk for Sánchez — she was accompanied by her future husband, Jeff Bezos (that is, one of the richest men in the world).

And, stop the presses, Sánchez’s look was not the most naked, over the top, or eye-popping dress on at the Met Museum — because at this year’s Met Ball, there were already a plethora of corsets and cleavage and butt-baring dresses (see: Emily Ratajkowski.)

By contrast, Sánchez’s theme appropriate Oscar de la Renta mega-gown was a real switch-a-roo for her. While her night before and night of looks were created by the same design team, they couldn’t have been more different. Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim are to thank for that — their design aesthetic for the dress, they told Vogue, was “elevated” and “polished.” The black velvet corset and full stained-glass-looking voluminous (an understatement) skirt was made of actual plexiglass shards — dangerous!

Sánchez likes living on the edge — she flies her own helicopters, after all. Sanchez told Vogue upon arrival, “I didn’t want people saying ‘Oh, that’s so Lauren — sexy, low cut. I said, ‘No, I think I’m going to try something else.” The skirt — in black, silver and white — resembling a cracked mirror or pieces of tile is the designers’ ode to Art Nouveau and the stained glass work of Louis Comfort Tiffany. The dress, called the Reflective Rosette mosaic ball town, also features a corseted black velvet bustier, while the skirt is made from around 2,000 hand-dyed mosaic pieces. In total, it took around 600 hours to complete. See all the 2024 Met Gala dresses here.

Lauren Sanchez attends The 2024 Met Gala Celebrating “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art on May 06, 2024 in New York City.

Even restaurateur Keith McNally, a recent Sánchez critic, was a fan of her Met Gala look. “It never feels good when reality doesn’t fit one’s narrative, but I must admit that Bezos and Sánchez both looked stunning and very beautiful tonight,” he posted on Instagram.

The latest Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, opens to the public on Friday, May 10. The Andrew Bolton-curated show spotlights fragile pieces from the institute’s archives, all viewed through a lens of nature. The exhibit’s coffee table book will be released on June 18.
