At Least 2 Dead in North Russia Train Derailment

At least two people were killed in a train derailment on June 26 in Russia’s Komi region, Russian Railways said.

Footage released by the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry shows emergency services inspecting the train at the site of the derailment.

Around 40 people were said to be injured. However, the governor of the Komi region, Vladimir Uyba, said on Telegram that only 10 people were hospitalized.

Russian Railways said train No 511 was heading from Vorkuta to Novorossiysk when it derailed. The company said on June 27 that work was underway to repair a track washout along the line where the derailment happened.

TASS said that access to the site was “complicated” by the remoteness of the area. “The area is surrounded by forests and swamps. There are no roads or helicopter landing sites in the vicinity,” the agency said.

A criminal case had been opened by investigators, TASS said. Credit: Russian Emergency Situations Ministry via Storyful
